“Good design is as little design as possible. Less, but better.” -Dieter Rams
Less is more. Keep it simple stupid. All these quotes are talking about the power of simplicity. Everyone has seen a horribly designed flier, website, business card, bumper sticker, banner, the list goes on and on. We tend to see more over-designed than under-designed items these days.
The problem is that most items you design and print don’t need to mention everything you ever thought someone needed to know. Just enough to be memorable and encourage them to go seek out more information. If someone sees a great printed piece they will look up the company or candidate. How many people you see walking around with one-liners as opposed to a couple of paragraphs or a simple logo compared to intricate painting. You only get that one chance when people look at something to stick in their minds. Don’t mess it up with something that looks like a pain to even start reading. I have always been a minimalist when it comes to design so I am hard on this point. But if they can’t figure out what it is or represents in a couple of seconds you have probably lost their attention. So keep it simple and powerful and make it work for you.
